Title : The Cheap Fish Of St. Giles's
By John Thomson and Adolphe. Smith. 1877
London, United Kingdom, 1877. At the end of XIX century, a small entrepreneur like Joseph Carney appearing at this vintage print, sees opportunities for new customers but he faces also many obstacles. He stood regularly in the street market between Seven Dials and Five Dials. He must beware of the police, who use to confiscated his barrows as well as the barrow renter (who will be fined too). Like many people of his class, he does not always sell fish, but only when the wind is propitious and it can be bought cheaply. This time, ha managed to buy a barrel of 500 fresh herrings for 25 shillings.
